S.H.E. is fabulous

[ 25-07-2013 ]

S.H.E. last performed live in Kuala Lumpur three years ago. At its concert at the Putra Indoor Stadium last Saturday night, the group – comprising Selina Jen, Hebe Tien and Ella Chen – brought along their new life experiences to give a one-of-a-kind performance for their Malaysian fans who filled up the stadium to capacity.

S.H.E. had been on a minor hiatus ever since Jen was badly burnt in an accident during filming in late 2010. But last year, the girls came together to release their 11th studio album, Blossomy, and have since been on the road for their 2gether 4ever World Tour 2013 of 11 cities.

Kuala Lumpur is considered an important stop for the group as Chen is often hailed as the “daughter-in-law of Malaysia” after her marriage to a Malaysian businessman last year.

With musical genres ranging from rock, pop, ballad to dance, the girls entertained their fans with 40 of their hits in a performance that lasted some three hours.

It was an absolute delight to watch the girls just being themselves on stage, teasing each other and cracking jokes, with Chen occasionally throwing in some Malaysian jargon.

The concert didn’t feel like so much a performance but more a meeting with their fans who are like their close friends.

The concert kicked off with the heavy rock Shero, Po Bu Ji Dai (Eager) and Tong Kuai (Happy). The fast and furious session was soon followed by mid-tempo ballads Yuan Fang (Distant) andBelief, before the girls then each gave a solo performance.

Cheeky Chen, who is often regarded as the tomboy of the group, showed up in a very revealing dress during her solo session, coyly showing off her bare back, which prompted some enthusiastic cheers from the crowd.

She even shamelessly posed and showed off her toned muscles in-between the two songs she performed – Hou Lian Pi (Thick-skinned) and Huai Nu Hai (Bad Girl).

Tien, the more quiet of the three, took to the stage soon after with an ethereal performance of two solo numbers, Love and Ji Mo Ji Mo Jiu Hao (It’s Good to be Lonely).

Elegant Jen, proudly displaying the scars on her arms, solemnly performed Meng (Dream), a song she penned during her recovery period.

Later, smiling but with tears in her eyes, she told her fans that the dark days are gone and she’s now happier than ever.

She then dedicated the song, Ai Wo De Mei Ge Ren (To Those Who Loved Me), to the audience.

One of the highlights of the show has to be the hologram session. But I’d never seen one that utilised the technology as well as it was done at S.H.E.’s concert.

On the darkened stage, a frame rose from the stage floor and the trio appeared within performingBu Xiang Zhang Da (Don’t Want to Grow Up).

The crowd gasped when suddenly the real S.H.E. appeared on stage to sing and dance together with what the audience now realised was a hologram projection of the girls on stage. Things got more interesting when multiple holograms of the girls joined them on stage.

On the songs Remember and Zhong Guo Hua (Chinese), the way the trio interacted with the special effects was another truly amazing spectacle.

Of course, the concert would not be complete without S.H.E. performing its biggest hits over the years such as Bo Si Mao (Persian Cat), Yu Zhou Xiao Jie (Miss Universe), Lao Po (Wife), Xia Tian De Wei Xiao and Re Dai Yu Lin (Rainforest).

The last song was specially dedicated to the audience and it prompted a massive karaoke session from the fans.

S.H.E. ended the night with Hua Yu Kai Hao Le (The Flowers Have Blossomed), Lian Ren Wei Man and Mei Li Xin Shi Jie.

S.H.E. 2gether 4ever World Tour 2013 concert in Kuala Lumpur was presented by Galaxy Group and supported by Malaysia Major Events, a division of Malaysia Exhibition & Convention Bureau (MyCEB), an agency under the Ministry of Tourism and Culture.
